My fiancee and I have discussed it and have decided that this is what we want in our driveway in a few years once the Mini is paid off. Right now our driveway consists of the Mini, the Audi (runs but needs work), and a 1996 Ford Windstar 3.8 (kind of runs...?). Here’s what we’d like our driveway to look like in 3-5 years:

1) 2006 R53 Mini Cooper S: My Daily (Light Mods to maintain and exemplify its status as a fun daily driver).

Kinja'd!!!

2) 2008/2009 Subaru Legacy Outback 3.0R (or XT if we can’t find a 3.0R anywhere): Meredith’s Daily (Light mods for lighting, ride height, durability, childproofing, and cargo usage; replacement for the van.)

Kinja'd!!!

3) 1991 Audi 80 Quattro: Backup/Suport vehicle for both of us in the event the Subaru or Mini need shop time, as well as what I’d drive in inclement weather and when volunteering for local rallies. (Long list of repairs and preventative maintenance, plus light suspension, lighting, and underbody protection mods, along with conversion to EFI for better reliability, performance, and fuel economy).

4) 2004/2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder: My weekend warrior and track/autocross toy (Heavily modded brakes, wheels and tires, suspension, and chassis; 2ZZ-GE or K20A2 swap- possibly supercharged...).

I gotta say, I’m pretty lucky to have a lady with such good taste in cars (wagons FTW!) and who’s cool with me having a track toy in the future. Our hope is that by the time the Mini is paid off, she and I will be in a position where she can cover her own costs of buying the Subaru and that I can afford to get a roller MR2 as a starting point.

That’s a good garage!

Ours currently consists of a 2004 BMW M3 (my daily), a 2010 Toyota Rav4 (her daily), and a 1992 Toyota LandCruiser (backup for shop time and also my winter/hiking/dog park/garden store truck). I just started teaching the kid to drive in the Cruiser, and sometime in the next year or two I’m sure we’ll be adding something like a late-’90s/early-’00s Volvo or Subaru wagon for him. Plus I want a toy to work on and hoon—either an old BMW or something weird and JDM... I live in the Pacific Northwest and there is a lot of 25-year-old Japanese RHD stuff in British Columbia just begging to be driven over the border. I just don’t know where we’ll park it all.

I’ve had it for going on 4 years now. The only reason it’s down and out right now is because I let the wrong dude fix the timing belt and didn’t do my research on installing new lower control arm bushings. It should be back on the road by spring, if I can find the money for a new distributor.

How hard was it for you to originally track down the 80?

Not hard. I happened upon it by chance. My ex-girlfriend and I sold her truck to pay for her to go back to school. We used the leftover money to procure an NB Miata for her (I drove it a lot, too) and a car for me. I originally wanted to get a ‘98-’01 Impreza Outback Sport and found one I liked, but she HATED the styling (said it looked like an insect). Since it was technically her money...

About 15 minutes later, trolling through craigslist, I saw the Audi and thought “OMG! Rally car heritage!” It was cheaper than the Impreza, ran well (minor issues) and came with a red 80 as a parts car. She liked the look of it over the Impreza and we went and checked it out. An old Vietnamese man who was the 2nd owner was selling it and was upfront about the few things it needed (trans mounts, tune-up, tires, radio, and odometer). After checking it out for mechanical red flags, test-driving it, and dickering for a bit, we bought both 80's for $1,800, plus $120 for the red one to be loaded onto a rollback and driven back to our place to be offloaded and gutted.

Something weird and JDM...

By hoon...do you mean track time or literally just hoon?

Not necessarily track time (I’m not a huge track day fiend, happy to take my M3 once or twice year) so much as just playing around on mountain roads and rural highways. I’m toying with something rallyable like a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R as they’re just becoming legal to import.

Weird, obscure, rallyable, and JDM.

Done.

My buddy has a 2005 XT Outback- 113K miles (or maybe 130k), replaced the turbo recently, and the engine just exploded on him (his words). If you need a cheap 2005 XT with no motor, let me know ;)

Aaaaand that’s why we’d prefer a 3.0R. XD
